The Rev. Dr. Dee Dee M. Coleman, Pastor |
The Reverend Dr. Dee Dee M. Coleman, a native New Orleanian who now resides in Oak Park, Michigan, is the Pastor of the Russell Street Missionary Baptist Church. In November 1999, Russell Street, which is the oldest church on the North End of the city, stepped out on faith and for the first time in its history, called Reverend DeeDee M. Coleman as its first female pastor. This preaching and teaching woman of God brings a vision, a plan and the Spirit to move Russell Street forward in the Lord. Reverend Coleman was baptized at the age of five by the late Reverend Walter Washington at the Fairview Baptist Church of New Orleans, Louisiana. She fellowshipped at Fairview for thirty-five years, serving in the following capacities: secretary of the Trustee Board, president of the Hospitality Committee, president of the Youth Choir, matron of the Youth Choir, chairperson for the Pastor's and Church's Anniversaries and church spokesperson. Since moving to Michigan, Reverend Coleman has been awarded many accolades for her boldness in speech and proclamation of uplifting the name of Jesus. She has been noted as an up and coming female in ministry, who has a "No-nonsense Approach to the Gospel." Reverend Coleman has been in the ministry since 1963 and was ordained as a Deacon in October, 1988; granted her license to Preach in October, 1990; and received Full Ordination to the Ministry in July 1993, all under the leadership of The Reverend Dr. Charles G. Adams, Senior Pastor of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Reverend Coleman preaches and teaches throughout the country and is unique in workshops on Women's issues, bereavement, church structure and deacon responsibilities. Reverend Coleman has a B.A. Degree in Business Administration from William Tyndale College, Farmington Hills, Michigan; a Master's of Arts Degree in Pastoral Ministry from Marygrove College, Detroit, Michigan; and is currently a Doctoral candidate to the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit, Michigan. Rev. Coleman, to her credit, was the beneficiary of a jaunt to England, where she was accepted to study on her Doctorate at Westminister Abbey, under the tutelage of High Minister Canon Donald Gray, who serves as Minister to the Royal Family in London. She was the first North American Black Baptist to be given the opportunity to study Church Structure on a Cathedral Crawl from Iona, Scotland; Paris, France; and throughout London, England while under the leadership of the Doctor Anthony C. Campbell, then Senior Pastor of the Russell Street Missionary Baptist Church. Reverend Coleman is the mother of Tabatha Brown (Samuel, Sr.) and the grandmother of Samuel Brown, Jr., Brianna Marie Dee Brown and Pamela Brown. When Asked what her motto is, she simply says, "If I can help somebody along the way, then mv living won't be in vain."
